Yumoto Onsen
Origins of Yumoto Onsen

During the period of Daido (806-810), the esteemed general known for pacifying barbarian tribes, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, discovered this hot spring during an eastern campaign.
Ancient documents from Konkoin Temple, affiliated with the Koyasan Shingon sect, contain records about this hot spring. According to these records, hot springs existed in the Yumoto area over 600 years ago.
Moreover, Akita University's research has uncovered "Travertine" dating back 6,000 to 10,000 years in the Yumoto area.
During medieval times, it's said that figures like the Satake clan and Japanese folklore pioneer Masumi Sugae bathed in this hot spring.
Throughout the Edo period, our inn prospered as a hot spring resort.
From the Meiji era to the Showa era, known as the "Oobuchi Shichibe Ryokan," it retained its reputation as a "Fertility Hot Spring," attracting many visitors without losing its acclaim.
Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs like hot springs. Authentic travertine, taking about 10 years to reach its current size, is displayed in the corridor of our former public bath. If interested, please take a look.

This is the former large public bath used until 1980.
